Photographers Natalie & Jacob Shelby
The personal journey of Jacob and Natalie, from the joys of parenthood to the heartache of loss, nurtured the seed of The Shelby Studio. Their shared experiences ignited a heartfelt mission to help others connect to their own pasts, transforming profound emotions into a lifelong passion for creating cherished mementos.
Our Philosophy
The first steps of a child, an innocent giggle, the quiet intimacy of an expectant mother; these moments that, while seemingly mundane, define the tapestry of our lives.
Have you ever wished for time to stand still? To capture the tender touch of a parent or the ecstatic leap of a child playing in the autumn leaves? The Shelby Studio transforms those fleeting moments into everlasting memories. Our portraits are more than just photographs; they are echoes of laughter, whispers of love, and the silent symphony of family bonds that stand the test of time.
The Shelby Studio promises more than just a photo session. We offer an experience - a walk down memory lane, a revisit to those candid moments that tend to blur as time passes. We pay homage to the past while celebrating the present, and in doing so, craft mementos that will remind you of the journey you've undertaken and the people who've walked beside you.

Photographing Family Milestones
We've been on an incredible photographic journey with a wonderful family that we first met at their maternity portrait session. The arrival of their adorable baby girl brought immense joy, and we were deeply honored when they asked us to photograph the precious moments of their newborn's early days. Choosing a lifestyle photoshoot once more, this time for their newborn, the family sought not only the timeless beauty of natural light but also the comfort and ease it offered.
Photographing a Journey
Life's journey is full of unexpected twists and turns, especially for families like the one I had the honor of photographing. With a lifestyle that embraces change and new horizons, this family of four, along with their two spirited teenage daughters, has cultivated a unique perspective on the world. As an experienced family portrait photographer, I was thrilled to be a part of their last chapter here, capturing their spirit against the backdrop of the diverse and captivating Netherlands.
In today's visually driven marketplace, a headshot photo holds significant weight in establishing a strong personal brand
A recent photography session in The Hague brought me the distinct pleasure of working with two well-traveled teenage boys
The holiday season makes for a great time to get family portraits made. The season is merry and bright, you’re a little more forgiving of your children’s craziness, and you need holiday gifts for the grandparents. It’s the busiest time of year for portrait photographers too running from October through December. So we’ve come up with a few suggestions for getting your family photos done. Hopefully this will help make it less stressful!
In our 6 years of running a portrait studio we have been asked to help families celebrate some wonderful moments in their lives. Maternity shoots for first pregnancies and a few final pregnancies. Newborn photoshoots celebrating those births, along with a number of other photoshoots including birthdays and graduations. Many times we’re simply celebrating the love a family shares.
How often have you found yourself frantically snapping off photo after photo in hopes of getting one usable photo? Probably more often than you care to admit. The truth is that while our smartphone cameras continue to improve exponentially our ability to use them effectively has not maintained that pace.
When I first spoke with Shelley about what type of portraits she wanted us to create she told me her primary goal was to recreate a photo. Ok, what sort of photo are we recreating I wondered?
Sarah loves the performing arts. Her passion for theater and dance lead her to open her own performing arts school, Bay Area Arts Conservatory, in League City. She grew up in the theater, dreaming of one day making her way onto the big stage. And, as it turns out, she would.
Prior to her design and styling consultation, Sarah and Jeff had brought it to my attention that Sarah had been feeling poorly about herself because of a negative body image. This is something many moms-to-be struggle to overcome. He believed that a maternity photoshoot with us might help her to begin feeling better about herself.
Take a photo every day. That’s kind of it. Sounds simple enough, right? Some people take a photo of the same scene every day, say the view out of their dorm room window or the same spot on their commute to work. Others take a photo of themselves every day as a way to document their newfound interest in fitness. Still, others choose a new subject each day. The options of what you photograph are of course limitless and completely up to you.
More than 1 trillion photos it’s estimated will be taken by the end of 2019. That’s 2,000,000,000,000 photos in 2019 alone.
Not everyone can afford to have their photos done professionally but that shouldn’t prevent them or their children from the benefits and joys of having their photos printed.
We believe that because our photos are so ubiquitous that we are doing a good job documenting our lives, creating little bookmarks in our lives that we can later revisit. The problem with this line of thinking is that we aren’t really interacting with these photos in the way we used to, or more importantly, the way that would most benefit us.
The use of pictures has gone a long way in easing Jack’s school anxiety and it’s helped alleviate some of our guilt about taking him to school. Beyond fixing the immediate issue we faced there have been a few positive and unexpected side effects, taking a photo every morning allows us to share a moment with Jack, no matter how big a hurry we are in. These few moments reinforce our bond with him and helps him to feel appreciated.
Too often we don’t believe ourselves to be good enough, or attractive enough, or smart enough. Being critical within reason is something I applaud, it’s how we get better after all but when these thoughts go too far they begin to wreak havoc on our lives. These overly critical thoughts prevent us from getting the most out of life and can even negatively affect our love life, our social life, and our work life.
Lauren is one of our talented makeup artists. She’s mom to a toddler, an entrepreneur and spends her days pampering other women for their important moments, whether its for a portrait session or a wedding. We were thrilled to learn that Lauren was expecting her second child and honored to be asked to photograph the special milestone. Every mom deserves the opportunity to be celebrated, no matter if it’s your first pregnancy or your fifth, each is unique and should be documented with maternity portraits.
Nikki is a fun and fabulous free spirit, to say the least. I’m not sure I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting someone with a more positive and deliberate energy. She and her husband are both crossfit athletes, each compete (and win) at local and statewide events. When I first got a call from her she expressed interest in creating maternity portraits that were both feminine and powerful.
It’s at this point that she made the decision to recreate or reimagine some of her old family photos. She wanted turn of the century characteristics with a contemporary sensibility. Now this was a photoshoot I could sink my teeth into!
We received a frenzied call at The Shelby Studio from Kelly during the peak of graduation season. Her daughter, Olivia, needed her senior portraits taken. The only issue was that Kelly wanted the senior photo session to happen before Olivia's graduation from Lamar High School…
We’ve all seen the photos of the family in a field of tall grass, bluebonnets if you’re in Texas, or those sunlit, bright beach session photos with the family walking hand in hand (ahem - our first family and maternity photos). So why is it that there is a growing demand for studio portraits?
Your child’s self esteem can be directly impacted by how often and in what manner they are exposed to their own image. A study done at Tulane University concluded that children who see photos of themselves have higher self esteem than those that are not exposed to their own photos. This should come as no surprise to anyone but it is certainly an aspect of a child’s well-being that many moms and certainly most photographers fail to consider.
Personal branding is at the forefront of small and local business marketing. It can help make or break a business struggling to compete in a competitive market. A key aspect of personal branding is making it personal with a branding photoshoot.
In an increasingly competitive job market it's not only important to show you at your best (which is what a headshot should do!) it's equally important to show that you understand what a company values. Even better, show that you share their values!
A professional photographer will help make you more engaging and add a level of authenticity to your brand as well as ensure that quality and style is something that comes to mind when people think about you or your brand.
Follow these simple steps and your holiday photos will be the envy of all your friends and family, you may even get some Instagram love!
A longtime favorite toy store for families and anyone that appreciates a local business’ commitment to community, FUNdamentally Toys has created some of the best selections of toys, games, and books you’ll likely ever find
The entire collection of photographs from this maternity session are dramatic and beautiful yet capture the experience of pregnancy in a different way. There are many sides to maternity and everyone has a unique experience, we are thrilled to have been a part of Megan's.
When you hear 'school photos' it's doubtful that what comes to mind is anything other than an awkward photo with a lousy background. When we were invited by the Spanish School 4Kids to do their spring portraits we were excited for the chance to show that school photos don't have to be awful, in fact they can be great!
Warmth in a Dutch Home
When it comes to maternity portrait photography, finding the right setting can make all the difference in creating memorable images. There’s something truly enchanting about Dutch homes and the soft, golden glow that filters through their windows creating an instant sense of coziness and warmth. This unique characteristic is what makes lifestyle photoshoots so exceptional - the combination of beautiful natural light and the comfort of being in your own home. The Dutch have a word for this - gezellig.
